Hanamurasaki

Hanamurasaki is a boutique ryokan in the historic Yamanaka Onsen district of Kaga, Ishikawa, operated by the same family for over 120 years. The current sixth-generation owner, Kohei Yamada, reimagined the ryokan with a modern artistic perspective, blending traditional craftsmanship with gallery-like spaces. With scenic views of the Kakusenkei Gorge, private saunas, and bespoke kaiseki dining, it offers a refined and culturally immersive retreat.

Overview

Hanamurasaki is a boutique ryokan where every detail has been designed to highlight both traditional Japanese aesthetics and contemporary artistry. The Japanese rooms feature tatami flooring, shoji screens, and expansive floor-to-ceiling windows that frame the gorge and seasonal gardens. Many suites incorporate original artworks by local artists, and a contemporary tea room allows guests to enjoy Japanese tea in a serene, gallery-like setting.

The ryokan’s philosophy is to share the charm of the region while passing Japanese culture on to future generations. Three years ago, a renewal project reimagined the ryokan—not to preserve tradition unchanged, but to reinterpret it for the modern traveler, blending comfort, design, and culture.

The on-site kaiseki cuisine showcases the region’s seasonal bounty, including freshly caught seafood from the Sea of Japan, locally grown vegetables, and ingredients from nearby mountain forests. Each dish is crafted with care to highlight the flavours and aesthetics of the season, providing a dining experience that perfectly complements the ryokan’s serene surroundings.

Location

From Kanazawa Station, you can reach Hanamurasaki in about 50–60 minutes using public transport. Take the JR Hokuriku Main Line to Kaga Onsen Station (roughly 30–35 minutes), then transfer to a local bus or taxi for the final 10–15 minutes to reach the ryokan. The property sits along the scenic Kakusenkei Gorge, beside a gently flowing river, surrounded by lush forests that change beautifully with the seasons.
