Kimpton Shinjuku

Overview

“Manhattan meets Tokyo” is how they choose to describe this new 160-room hotel, and it’s certainly true to say that the emerging, very fashionable ‘Kimpton’ brand have been largely inspired by the New York art and fashion scene. However, this hotel also has a strong sense of place, imbibed in the spirit of Tokyo, as they have focussed on the Japanese concept of Okaeri, meaning ‘welcome home’. Local artisanal traditions marry together within the well-worn, relaxed New York hotel-wide-vibe. It is all about clean lines and Japanese woodwork sitting  alongside tasteful touches such as intricate floral metal accent sand bold pops of colour; including a striped fabric sofa intended to capture the chaos of Tokyo’s Shibuya crossing.

The hotel has two dining options, ‘The Jones Café’ on the first floor and ‘District’, the second-floor restaurant open from brunch to dinner with a bar lounge allowing patrons to see in the small hours. The café is a relaxed space serving coffees, craft beers, and sweet and savoury treats against a backdrop of indie music, lacquer tables, and reclaimed material turned art pieces. An ‘oh TOKYO’ sign recalls the signature glowing lights of the Shinjuku district, whilst oversized sofas make it a harder than it should be to get up after breakfast for a day of exploration.

Location

The Kimpton is located over in the enthralling Shinjuku district, with its neon-streets and many restaurants and bars, as opposed to the luxury enclave close to Tokyo Station where most of the other premium hotels are situated. As you can tell, we love the Kimpton, it just suits us – it’s charm, warm and homely interior and middle-of-the-action location.
